Gourmet Coffee Traceability Hackathon in Costa Rica

Coffee is a real deal here in Costa Rica where WorldSibu’s development team lives. By now you have probably already tasted a cup of coffee made in here. Due to our geography, economy, and other characteristics, around 20 years ago we decided to go by quality instead of quantity, excelling in the world.

Some countries are really fans of our coffee but challenges remain in the supply chain and some other pieces where traceability can bring a lot of value. A few months ago we started to coordinate along Cenfotec University and PROCOMER (National Agency in charge of promoting Costa Rican exportations of goods and services) a 2 days hackathon to create smart contract systems that meet the industry needs.

The event had the support of Costa Rica’s country brand.

It was a big challenge to tackle in just 2 days, but we brought together a group of experts in the field to provide clear insights on the issue. And just as important as understanding the challenge correctly, we also brought Convector as the development core tool so that for the devs, creating a blockchain was a seamless experience.

The only prerequisite for devs was to know JavaScript. Yes, just like you hear it. They didn’t need any previous Blockchain knowledge.

As soon as the devs started to code, they realized the internal and external complexities of putting a cup of Costa Rican coffee in a shop in front of the Eiffel Tower. Some used Domain Driven Design to model the participants and business entities, and others tokenized some of the key concepts needed to achieve traceability.

The top priorities for ICAFE and CooproNaranjo were trust and ways for customer to get to know the people who made their coffee (usually a cup of coffee is a blend of multiple producers).

A big focus of the hackathon was on creating the right presentation layers while building a flexible yet robust data structure. Each team distributed their efforts according to their preferred focus, for instance food safety, fair price, exports efficiency, and producer identification.

An amazingly simple UI to track how the Costa Rican coffee moves over time merging with other producers and keeping its quality properties.

Even though each team excelled with their solutions the winning team focused a bit more in the experience of the end consumer and how they could access the data, providing higher value to Costa Rican coffee.

What comes next?

Apart from the money the winning team got, the sponsors are providing support for them to continue the project. Oruka is providing entrepreneurship and product guidance, GS1 is providing international identification standards training, GBM can provide free cloud services for development, and WorldSibu can provide technical guidance to take their platform to production. From the business side, ICAFE and CooproNaranjo along a pool of coffee growers have already signed up to join a pilot in the upcoming months.

Wondering how they got to create such a platform so quickly without previously being experts in blockchain? Checkout Convector! And find out how to create smart contract systems the easy way with just JavaScript knowledge.
