Who we are

Well, we can pretend to have it all figured out so you’d think we are cool, but we started as a bunch of guys that like to code and build stuff. Then we decided to come together to build a community in our school.

Developers & designers.

Coffee-drinkers & amateur drummers.

Dancers & soccer players.

Our diversity and different experiences make us a stronger team, cos it means we get a butt-load of ideas when we sit down to talk.

We are not code ninjas. Barely intermediate-level developers. And we definitely do not have it all figured out.

We are just a part of the Covenant University Developer Community.

Why The Community Exists + Why You Need To Join One

The community exists because if you want to get started in any successful endeavor, school is probably the best place to start.

We’ve heard time and again that the best place to meet your co-founder is school, from people like Jessica Livingston (Co-founder of YC).

But from our own perspective, we think the best place to build your network is school. Having a network of people that you can build things with is 🔑🔑. The machine you build isn’t what matters, it’s the machine that builds the machine that does. [which is you and the people you build it with] 🔥🔥.

This community exists because we have realised that and cannot wait to get started, building the future we know Nigeria should have.

How to contribute to the community

This is really important.

We’ve noticed that one of the core reasons students haven’t been active or don’t contribute to developer communities is that they feel like they are just learning and hence ‘are not good enough’.

Please go and throw this mentality away 🗑. We’ll wait.

Done? Okay.

You don’t have to be good enough, none of us are TBH. We learn by contributing, designing and most especially doing code reviews.

Your contributions also do not have to be all code. Anything you feel would help us achieve our goal —

Building a self-sustaining developer community in Covenant University.

— is very welcome.

Here are some of the top ways to contribute for your convenience:

  1. This should go without saying, but please complete your profile and add a picture. It’ll help us recommend you for stuff.
  2. Help answer questions others ask on the Slack.
  3. Join the Slack if you haven’t. Request for an invite here.
  4. Clone a repo (project) and read through to see if there’s anything anyone missed.
  5. You can even sketch designs for a dope sticker that’ll show the world how badass we are.
  6. Spread the word. Invite your friends to join the Slack.
  7. No question is too basic please, ask. Someone else will learn from it.

This list is not exhaustive. If you have any ideas, feel free to reach out. Cheers! 🙌

How to be an asset

Honestly, just have sense. Don’t be a jerk. Don’t ridicule people for the questions they ask. Don’t come on to brag about your ‘accomplishments’. It’s not pretty.

We honestly can’t wait to get to building things with you.

Suggestions on how we can improve these are always welcome. They aren’t set in stone.

Please share this so your friends know it’s happening and/or invite them to join also! 😬
