COVAX vaccines are just beginning to be released to low and middle income countries (LMICs), but before vaccines can save lives, governments, National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs), National Statistical Offices (NSOs), and other actors must develop their vaccine allocation strategies.

In alignment with national-level deployment and vaccination plans (NDVPs), data and related analytics tools are emerging as a key priority to creating equitable and impactful national allocation strategies, especially with the emerging new variants and the need to reopen public spaces.

However, many LMICs lack both the data and easy to use analytics tools to design these plans. As has been highlighted by ministries and partners across many LMICs, creating plans for vaccine distribution requires data at every step, especially high-quality subnational data.

High-quality data — that is accessible in easy to use formats — is at the foundation of equitable, transparent and efficient vaccine delivery, and feeds directly into micro-planning at the national, regional and local level. The image above is an example of granular, geospatially supported data that is required to:

  1. Understand who is most vulnerable and at risk for COVID-19;
  2. Estimate numbers and location of frontline and essential workers;
  3. Plan for distribution to last-mile communities (especially vaccines requiring cold-chain storage); and
  4. Track numbers and percentages of distribution by risk, location, and population type for public accountability and for ongoing planning.

  • Others within the humanitarian & development space

The COVIDaction Vaccine Data Co-Lab

The COVIDaction Vaccine Data Co-Lab is a FCDO-supported programme working with partners engaged in the use of data that inform vaccine prioritisation, planning and rollout across LMICs. This includes: 1) collaboration with governments, civil society organisations, and network partners to highlight research and best practices; 2) coordination with existing in-country data partners to address data gaps and ensure alignment with global initiatives run by COVAX and others, and; 3) an open call for technical assistance and matchmaking funds that support governments directly.
