Video 15: Versatility in football
In their 2019 report called “At The Limit”, the global players union FIFPro found that many football players play up to 50, 60, and, in extreme cases, even close to 80 games per season!
At the same time research shows that, between the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s, the distance covered by the average top-level football player doubled from 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) to 10,000 meters (6.2 miles) per game.
With so many games being played per season and players being asked to do so much running every game, it has become physically impossible for managers to play the same players every single game.

In Chapter 10 of my book (“Versatility”), I talk about how managers these days not only need more players but also need more versatile players that can play in different positions across the pitch.
