Video 16: Is football unfair?
A few weeks ago, Manchester United beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3–2 after a penalty kick in the 100th minute of the game (10 minutes into stoppage time).
It was the most fortunate of victories, as Brighton hit the woodwork 5 times throughout the game, had 18 shots on goal, and thoroughly dominated their opponents. Brighton’s loss was, therefore, labeled as “unfair” and “undeserved”.
But what does that even mean? Should you deserve victory just because you worked harder than somebody else? When do you deserve a certain positive or negative outcome in life and when is it undeserved? And, frankly, who cares, because isn’t the end result all that matters?

I talk about the tricky topic of fairness, both in life and in football, in Chapter 19 of my book.
