Many of us dream of independence from the workplace, and for some the solution is to become a digital nomad.

The simplest description of a digital nomad life is that it’s about not having to stick to the same location. You will be able to decide where to work, since you mainly work remotely or with your own company/project. Popular destinations for digital nomads are low price countries in Southeast Asia.

How do you become a Digital Nomad?

Not sure if it’s something for you? You don’t have to leaving your employment just to try it out. There are some alternatives if you’re interested in that lifestyle. Here’s a few:

Stay at your current employment

Ask your boss if you can work remotely for a limited time. You never know until you ask! That way you can get a feeling for that way of life. If you don’t get a yes, try it out during a vacation and work remotely.

Study remotely

Changing direction in life? Take a study leave from your job. Many universities offer remote lessons — why not take the opportunity to change scenery? You can study remotely at our bootcamp, but you can also travel to one of our study locations and vary between working in an office, and working remotely. We have offices in Sweden, South Africa, and the Netherlands!

Work on a project of your own

Want to fulfill a work dream and start your own company, or just elaborate on a project? In some countries you can take leave from work for a startup. No need to stay in one place while doing it! This requires you finding funding, or having savings from your earlier work.

Already decided?

Well then, change to a remote job! Maybe the most obvious choice, but it requires you to quit your job and hope that you find a good employer. Slightly more risky if you’re not sure about this lifestyle. But hey, you can always change it if it’s not something that suits you!

Head over to Remote.com to see what jobs are available. If you want a bit of help, you can join a place like Hubud to access offices or Roam to be able to travel around. Interested in reading up before you make a decision? Try the book Remote by David Heinemeier Hansson (creator of Ruby on Rails).
