Female Coding Communities

It can be hard to be the only woman, regardless if it’s in a developer team or a tech program in school. There are still some untrue stereotypes and systematic problems which makes it hard for women to pursue a career in development.

Why does this matter? Read this post about diversity in tech. Today I’m just here to provide you with some great communities where you can learn, gather strength and become a stronger coder. Because you’re not really alone.

Geek Girl Meetup (Sweden):

“Geek Girl Meetup is a non-profit organisation aiming to elevate female role models, leverage networks and facilitate knowledge exchange within the tech, IT and startup industry.”

Geek Girl Meetup in Sweden is a great community for women in tech. They have events throughout the year, connecting female coders with likeminded people and companies. They offer a great platform for startups and inspiring talks. Once a year they have a big Geek Girl Meetup. I attended the last one, before I even started coding, and it was beyond perfect. There was something for everyone — internet security talks, coding talks, startup and project talks, ice cream, food, standup comedy, quizzes, parties, guest speakers (ANITA SARKEESIAN! Ehm, sorry about that), and much more. And it was so much fun to meet other female tech nerds!

Women Who Code

“We envision a world where women are proportionally represented as technical leaders, executives, founders, VCs, board members, and software engineers.”

As a member you become a part of the global community, get hold of coding resources, scholarships, a job board and much more.

Rails Girls

“Our aim is to give tools and a community for women to understand technology and to build their ideas. Learn sketching, prototyping, basic programming and get introduced to the world of technology. Rails Girls was born in Finland, but is nowadays a global, non-profit volunteer community.”

Of course we have to mention Rails Girls, because here at Craft Academy we looove Rails! And it’s fun that it was founded in a neighbouring country to Sweden. They offer great guides and have events all over the world.

Girls In Tech

“Girls in Tech (GIT) is a global non-profit focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of girls and women who are passionate about technology. GIT aims to accelerate the growth of innovative women entering into the high-tech industry and building startups. GIT is not just for professional women. We exist for anyone with an interest in technology, startups and providing women with a platform for growth.“

They have more than 100,000 members located around the globe, and have events, a large community, a job board, and mentorship programs.

Women Techmakers

“From 2014 to present, Women Techmakers is continually launching global scalable initiatives and piloting new programs to support and empower women in the industry. Google’s Women Techmakers program provides visibility, community, and resources for women in technology.”

Women Techmakers offers access to curated resources and tools, events, a page with even more awesome communities, and advice from successful women in the field.

Women Who Startup

“A learning platform for a global community of female entrepreneurs and innovators. Women Who Startup provides a network, a platform, multiple sources of collaboration and rapid-learning to female entrepreneurs and innovators who are committed to building successful companies.”

It costs to join this community, but it connects startups with the community, provides experts you can ask questions to (even through their slack channel) and a job board.

In need of some advice, or do you just have to blow off some steam? Reddit is the place to be. Use whatever subreddit that fits you best, subscribe and post. You can be anonymous, as long as you don’t provide too much information (which I strongly recommend you don’t).

Craft Academy is a Tech Education Provider that aims to bring new talent to the market and help to solve the shortage of tech workers. We are founded on the belief that modern development standards, agile methodologies and business skills are fundamental for ITC professionals.

Our primary service is a 12-week coding bootcamp designed to provide individuals with a foundation of skills that allows them to enter the industry as junior developers.

With that foundation, our learners find employment in various industries or start their own businesses that bring new innovations to the market.
