We need more women in tech

It’s a strange time for women to start a career within tech. On one hand, the industry has realised that they need more diversity to be able to progress faster and they aim to hire more women. On the other hand, it’s hard to break the old habits and stereotypes at the workplace.

What can the industry do?

A good company should aim to have a diverse team and leaders. To be able to get more women into the tech industry it needs to stop being a boy club — the workplace needs to take serious action against sexual harassment, degrading behaviour, fight isolation, and (at the beginning at least) elevate smart women to higher positions. We need a policy for employees that encourage them to stand up for each other when they hear sexist comments or other disrespectful behaviour.

It’s a long way to go, but it’s not rocket science

Society needs to encourage everyone with an interest in tech to study (Girls Who Code is great!), and we need more role models that will show younger girls that there’s a future for them within the industry. We need more visual proof that women in tech exists, and we need to break the stereotype that you have to be an antisocial guy to be a great programmer (who likes that stereotype anyway?). We need to realise that “women in tech” aren’t different from “other women” — everyone can code if they try!

But why does it matter?

As we’ve written in an earlier post, the industri has much to win by getting more women to code.

Diversity is not only good for the industry — in the long run it is absolutely necessary if we want to be able to deliver good services, develop meaningful products and work in international projects.

We learn from each other, and create better solutions. Women are half of the world’s population, and they use the technology just as much as the men — they’re certain to have improvements that hasn’t been thought of before.

Craft Academy is a Tech Education Provider that aims to bring new talent to the market and help to solve the shortage of tech workers. We are founded on the belief that modern development standards, agile methodologies and business skills are fundamental for ITC professionals.

Our primary service is a 12-week coding bootcamp designed to provide individuals with a foundation of skills that allows them to enter the industry as junior developers.

With that foundation, our learners find employment in various industries or start their own businesses that bring new innovations to the market.
