You may have caught wind of a listicle making rounds on the internet from some time now, discussing recent innovations in home brewing. The article, which CNN has originally published, lists the top gizmos that help brewers make beer from scratch at home. And while Reddit users still prefer doing it old-school by fermenting their wines or beers with custom kits and enduring the “cheap yeast” taste or the alcohol’s lack of CO2, one cannot overlook the value of said new innovations. Be ready to break the piggy bank though because they do not come cheap:

PicoBrew Zymatic

The PicoBrew Zymatic costs $1,300 but promises to produce good-quality homemade craft beer at your fingertips. It’s basically not a machine but a robot, and is powered by Arduino, a type of hardware/software platform invented by former Microsoft employees, Jim and Bill Mitchell. The highly intuitive machine can replicate recipes as easily and automates the whole brewing process from start to finish, so no need to stand by and check on your brew. The company has released newer version of the PicoBrew which is now available with AMTEGA control boards and other custom parts, according to CNN.

Brewbot

A group of Scottish brewers are also coming up with a beer-brewing robot that handles heating, cooling, and all the mixing involved to make a glass of beer. Called Brewbot, Brewbot is connected to a brewing machine and can be controlled through your iPhone to create instant beer from a wide range of ingredients and recipes. Sounds easy and accessible, right? It costs $2,400 a pop though.

Before getting your brew on with these machines, however, make sure that you know the alcohol laws in your state through and through. While it is finally legal to brew beer in all 50 states (Alabama was last to legalize home brewing last year), you have to assume responsibility for the safety of the people drinking your homebrew too and the people around them.

It’s interesting how the alcohol beverage industry has evolved throughout the years. From manually fermenting beer in barrels to instant craft beer-brewing robots, the times have indeed changed a lot. And these welcome changes will only push the industry to grow further in the next few years.
