Welcome to our first devlog!

We’re not 100% sure how often we’ll do these, partially because it depends on how much interesting stuff we’ve got to show you, and partially because as a smallish studio we’re all very busy with making the game and this is likely to be something which slides off the end of the priorities list if time gets tight.

However, our intention right now is to do one of these at least monthly. Wish us luck! 😉

So, first off, what even is Crayta?

In a nutshell, Crayta is a game which enables and encourages people to bring their game ideas to life.

Current Status: Pre-Alpha

We’ve been working on Crayta for almost a year, and we “officially” announced a few weeks ago (if you’ve not already read it, check out the blog post our CEO, Richard Smithies, wrote to go with the announcement).

It’s still very much pre-alpha, so we’re iterating a lot as we get feedback from our wonderful community of testers.

Today’s release is a really important one for us, as it includes Discord login which means that (eep!) we’ll be taking down the IP allowlist later this week and letting everyone access the game’s site and register an account.

A key is still required to actually access the game, and this’ll be the case for a long while yet, but this change means that we’re able to let people in without a massive manual step which often needs repeating (dynamic IPs = 😢), which means we’re able to let a lot more people in!

Although from our perspective the Discord login is one of the biggest changes in this update, let’s take a look at what else we’ve updated…

Other Improvements

  • No longer have to select an entity to edit its voxels, just pick a voxel tool and edit away to your heart’s content!
  • New voxel materials: Sand, Snow, Cobbles, StoneBrickMedieval
Sand, Snow, Cobbles, StoneBrickMedieval
  • New UI, it’s still very placeholder but should help you find the tools you need a bit more quickly (icons have text labels now!).
  • New music and sounds, primarily for the new Arcade City theme.
  • New time of day, skybox, and atmospheric settings (including fog, so I’m looking forward to your Silent Hill style spooky levels in time for Halloween!)
  • API and entity changes — these are likely to break some people’s existing scripts, but the fixes are easy and we’re on hand to work with you on these.
  • Options menu including graphical and audio settings and keybindings.
  • Performance updates and bug fixes (as always)!

More detailed patchnotes (and a video) are available on our forum, or swing by our Discord if you want to chat about getting access to Crayta!
