How to get your perfect Crayta screenshot — and look great doing it!
Lucy, our Art Director, takes you through the incredible new feature coming in the next big update.

With the Neon Coast season release comes an exciting new feature we have called Photo Mode — a suite of tools for taking screenshots within Crayta, either of your character as the main focus using ‘Selfie Cam’ or any other shot of Crayta using ‘Fly Cam.’

We have also added Poses. Whilst the characters obviously look amazing just alluringly staring into the middle distance, we’ve added some pose options to the menu to spice things up a bit. You can access these directly through the Photo Mode menu as well as the usual routes. Currently there is a default pose to play with and some further poses to be gained by progressing through the Neon Coast Battle Pass. We will of course add to this library over time, both default and rewarded.

Why have we made this feature?

Photo Mode gives more freedom of cameras during Play and Preview modes in Crayta, it’s fun to use and it gives our users more control over the images they can get out of Crayta.

  • Is your character looking amazing in a hard earned outfit or just generally looking marvellous? Selfie time.
  • Won first place in an obby, or pulled off an amazing feat of dexterity to get somewhere tricky? Record the occasion for posterity and add a pose.
  • Found something intriguing, amazing, amusing or plain ridiculous? Grab it and share it.
  • Is Crayta just looking particularly glorious that day and you want to record it? Fly Cam will get you a great shot.

Plus there’s some great practical uses for the feature, especially if you’re a creator and you want screenshots, game covers or images to capture your development story whilst your game is running in Preview.

And an added bonus is that the more great-looking images you make, the more likely you are going to share them on social media, the more people see those images, the more likely they are to check out Crayta.
And more players = more fun for everyone!

How does it work?

Press P for Photo Mode to open up the feature in-game or in preview mode and you will be transported to an orbit cam focussed on your character. The menu on screen then shows you the options available:

Poses

Here you can choose a pose if required and use the camera that our art team has set up to give you a camera-ready composition.

Camera

Here you can choose Selfie Mode (a camera that orbits around the character) or Fly Cam (a camera that un-tethers you from your character and lets you take shots of anything from any angle — use the WASD keys to fly about or pick extra camera options such as Field of View and Roll).

Other Features

We’ve also added a couple of extra helpers such as a ‘thirds grid’ (to help with composition) and a Timer option. The ‘View Photos’ button will open the folder on your PC where your screenshots are saved.

Then when you’re ready to take a pic hit Space and there will be a short countdown then a click/flash: your image is saved to your hard drive.

IMPORTANT: Some things to consider for Creators

If you are a creator there are potentially gameplay consequences to allowing your players to use the Fly Cam to, for example, whizz around checking out secret locations or find out where their teammates are hiding, and other general spoilers. You may want to ensure this functionality is switched off if that’s going to have an undesired impact in your particular game.

Fly Cam functionality will be switched off for all new and existing games by default in the World Settings so if you do want to give your players the opportunity to fly free and take screenshots of your game then remember to check the box.

Improvements and developments coming soon

Photo Mode is a new feature and we intend to add more functionality in future so we’d love to know how you get on with it and what else you’d like to see in future iterations. Options we’re discussing at this end include: capturing video, adding screen overlays, and hopefully more camera options.

Let us know your thoughts and make sure you share your screenshots with us in Discord and on social media, using the #CraytaPhotography tag!
