At the end of September, the Telegraph reported that Willis sold the rights to his face to a deepfake startup called “Deepcake,” making him the first actor to make this kind of deal.

Several media outlets picked up the Bruce Willis deepface story, which went viral. However, a representative for the actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he had “no partnership or arrangement” with the business.

Deepfakes produce convincing videos using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies, frequently including politicians or celebrities. For example, several deepfakes of Tom Cruise went viral on TikTok last year.

The technology has the potential to revolutionize the industry for performers who are no longer able to perform. However, it also has a dark side: production companies can steal an actor’s image and likeness and use it without their consent.
