The Case for “Messy” Note-Taking
Why Perfect Systems May Slow You Down
The point of jotting things down isn’t to craft a masterpiece. It’s to quickly capture ideas so you can act on them later.
When you get hung up on making everything neat and tidy, you spend more time managing your notes than actually using them.
Messy notes often work better than perfect ones.
It’s time to rethink the idea that perfect notes equal effective notes. A more relaxed, “messy,” and action-oriented approach to note-taking might be the game-changer you need.
The problem with “perfect” notes…
A perfectly organized note system sounds great….everything has its place, and it’s easy to find what you need.
In reality, though, an overly structured system can create more hassle than help.
Here’s why:
- You spend too much time organizing instead of thinking. The energy spent tagging, categorizing, and filing each note often overshadows the value of the information itself.
- Creativity suffers under rigid systems. Great ideas don’t always fit into neat boxes. When you force them into strict formats too soon, you lose the ability to make natural connections.
