How To Make Hand Sanitizer At Home.

Hi guys, it’s Tim from Create-A-Lase, your trusted source of creative DIY projects as well as your one stop shop for all things laser and printing related. However, just for now we will make something different but is very handy to have around especially with this Coronavirus or Covid19 pandemic. Today, we will be learning how to make hand sanitizer at home.

As we all know, one way to keep ourselves protected from Covid19 is keeping our hands clean. This is usually done through handwashing, but what if you are outside and don’t have access to soap and water? That’s where having hand sanitizer with you would help a lot. Prevention is better than cure, so in this tutorial we will cover how to make hand sanitizer at home to help protect you and your loved ones.

Before we start though, let’s prepare what we need.

Materials you need:

  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Glycerol
  • 10cc and 1cc Syringe for measuring
  • Sterilized Bottle Container (60ml bottle)
  • Sterilized Mixing Container
  • Funnel

Let’s Start!

Step 1: Preparing the formulation: For this one we will just be making a small volume of hand sanitizer as compared to the WHO’s page which is a 10 liter preparation.

Step 2: Formulation: Since we are going to make a small volume production, list down the original formulation from WHO’s website on a spreadsheet for Isopropyl alcohol, Hydrogen peroxide, and Glycerol then get the total amount. After getting the total amount you just need to divide it from each formulation to get the percentage.

E.g. Isopropyl alcohol 7515ml / 8077ml total amount

Now for Step 3: Get the final measurement amount: Once you have the percentage from step 2, just multiply it from 60 as we are using a 60ml bottle and that’ll be your final measurement for a 60ml hand sanitizer.

E.g. Isopropyl alcohol 93% * 60 = 55.82518262, our measurement is going to be 55ml for the Isopropyl alcohol

Step 4: Mix all the ingredients: Using your syringe just measure and mix all the ingredients in a clean mixing container then transfer the mixture to a 60ml sanitized bottle using a funnel.

Finally for Step 5: Quarantine the mixture first: Importantly, leave it for 72 hours, as this allows any spores present in the alcohol or the new/reused bottles to be destroyed.
