Our newest investment Serinus is automating alarm and crisis management with a novel SaaS approach. This post describes Serinus’ solution and our rationale for investing in the company.

What Serinus does

Serinus is a provider of alarm and crisis management solutions based in Hagen, Germany. In critical situations, Serinus’ software automatically alerts the responsible persons and initiates all necessary steps for crisis management according to a pre-defined set of rules. This makes crisis management much more efficient and can even save lives, as we all know that human errors are particularly frequent in crisis situations.

Application scenarios range from alarm situations (e.g. stand-by alarms, emergency calls, fire and evacuation alarms or the convening of a crisis team), to crisis management (e.g. product recalls, cyber-attacks, disruptions of production processes or major damage situations) and human machine interactions (e.g. monitoring of technical building infrastructure, production plants or ICT components).

As an example, Lebenshilfe Berlin uses Serinus’ software to submit home emergency calls via app alerts to the nursing staff’s smartphones. This improves the mobility of the specialists and reduces reaction times. Another example is the technical monitoring of a wind farm at a municipal energy supplier via public IoT networks. The rapid transmission of error messages can prevent downtime of the entire wind farm.

Why we invested

Serinus is trailblazing the shift from on-premise to cloud-based solutions in its industry. In addition, the company’s software supports IoT use cases via media-gateways. The relevance of Serinus’ software becomes clear when looking at the impressive list of customers that the company is already working with. Deutsche Telekom, EnBW, Siemens or Bechtle are just a few examples.

The Serinus founders have worked in the critical communications and enterprise safety solutions industry for many years and are now applying their profound sector-knowledge to develop a software that sets new standards in its field, especially regarding ease-of-use and installation effort.

How this investment fits into our investment strategy

We are investing in companies that are “powering the automation of industry and business”. Serinus fits perfectly in our investment focus, automating tasks that — until today — have been carried out manually or via expensive and error-prone on-premise solutions. Alarm and crisis management is a good example for B2B-software technology, focused on intelligent gathering and analysis of data, helps overcome inefficiencies and solve real-world problems.

If you are a founder automating industry or business, we would love to hear from you.
