We will make something great less than 50% of the time. And that’s okay.
Last year I gave myself a challenge, to create 66 beats in 66 days. In those 66 days, I made a beat everyday and frankly, some of them were terrible, I mean really bad. I only showed them to one of my friends because he was the one who agreed to keep me committed to the challenge.
When I was done with the challenge, I had 24 beats I really liked, 24 beats that were worth uploading to my Soundcloud. That’s less than half, but more than enough.
There is are very important principles to be learned here:
1. We will fail more often than we will succeed
And that’s okay, in fact, that’s the way things go for most successful people. Weather its basketball, writing, making music, or drawing… Many of our works may not see the light of day, and even if they do, they probably won’t be as successful as 20% of our work. And that’s all we need, but we must keep practicing, the more we work the better our chances of making something worthy of the spotlight.
2. Consistency is key
The more I worked, the easier it became… Not necessarily creating great beats but the seating down and making more and more music. Steven Pressfield said in his book “The war of Art”: ‘the difference between a professional and an amateur is that the professional knows, the hardest part is seating down and doing the work. The amateur always makes excuses.”
3. The most important thing is doing the work
All I did, for those 66 days was sit down and work… Nothing more, nothing less. And that’s all that matters, every now and then you will come up with something amazing and even surprise yourself.
So keep working, keep the consistency going and know that you’ll come up with great things less than 50% of the time and that’s okay. That’s all you need. ☺
