Inspiration:

Given this opportunity to work on a project that was inherently very different than my group game. Additionally, during our game lab in class, I was most interested in the Mario game. I think I enjoyed that game was because it had a very intuitive user experience as well as well as visually simplistic and charming graphics. Building off of this for my indiviudal game, I was inspired by classic nostalgic games and my one-button idea of creating a game inspired by a city-scape.

Creating the Game:

With both those elements in mind, I decided to create a game inspired by the 2D template that I have named City Jumper. Building off of that I worked on creating a cohesive aesthetic that exuded a nostalgic side-scrolling feel as well as finding imagery that worked with this theme. Then I wanted to incorporate a character that was also in line with my theme. In order to do this, I had to create a sprite.

Creating my Sprite —
This was my favorite part of working my individual game! I was able to explore a part of Unreal Engine that I hadn’t during my individual game, working on a character, given that in VR you are the character! I expected this to be a relatively simple process but in fact, it was more to difficult to figure out than I had expected. In order to create an animation with idling and running and jumping, I had to create a flipbook with a new character not, just input an image. Below are some screenshots of how I did this.

Movement —

Another key aspect of this game was connecting my sprite to the movement elements of the game (running, jumping and idling). Additionally I looked into the axis and action mapping to see how different keys impact certain movements.

Next Steps:

Moving forward with a longer time-frame I would develop the level design further with a health bar, obstacles and a clear game over graphic!
