So I was able to play the original Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Family Computer. It was my first time playing the game on this console so it was interesting to see how the controls worked with the game. At first glance, it looked just like the version I played on the PC. The gameplay seemed about the same too — jump to hit blocks and crush enemies etc — but I realized that there were a lot of differences with what actions the character can do. It was difficult to accurately jump across the hills and there seemed to be a bit of a lag. Even when crushing the enemy, it was harder to aim than playing on the game cube or wii. Also on other versions of the game I was able to do multiple jumps in the air, jump from the walls(side to side) and crouch under narrow pathways. It seemed almost impossible to reach higher plains or bricks above the ground. When reaching the pole at the end of the level, I couldn’t get higher than 400 no matter how hard I tried. It was also interesting to see that the smaller Mario couldn’t access as much things as the bigger Mario. The unlimited coin bricks were also difficult to take full advantage of. The two player gameplay was different as well. While multiple characters could share the screen together on recent Mario games, this one only had one character at a time, so it didn’t feel like a competition or a joint playing experience. It almost seemed disconnected in a way and didn’t really foster togetherness.
