BI Madness 2018 Begins…

A Bit Differently

--

For several years, we have been running a bracket each March to determine the top Business Intelligence tool in the market. For several years, it has been a runoff between Tableau and Qlik. Runoff being a kinder term than runaway — which is far more accurate. Watching that a third time didn’t seem like a lot of fun.

This year’s Gartner Magic Quadrant didn’t help. Could Power BI upset Tableau or Qlik? Possibly. But the field is faltering. Software Advise’s version (the cover image), well let’s face it — is designed to demonstrate the need for Software Advise more than any real evaluation.

When it comes to enterprise reporting, there are really only a handful of choices, so fielding an elite eight seems like an exercise in futility. This year we are only going to run a final four. But we think that will make it more interesting!

The final four bracket will feature a match-up between Tableau and Power BI, that should be good. It will also feature a match-up between our defending champion Qlik and a yet to be determined dark horse. We are inviting you the readers to nominate who that will be. Just drop a name and a reason in the comments below. Between now and March 23rd we will collect suggests to determine who the dark horse fourth candidate will be.

Along the way, we will feature articles on our Charting Ahead magazine featuring many potential solutions. You will be able to vote in the comments of those articles as well. We will feature solutions like Looker, Chart.io, SAP and more… but you can vote for which ever solution you chose — even one not listed above. On March 24th, we will announce the final — final four and begin two weeks of voting for this year’ winner.

Will it be Qlik for a third straight year? Will Tableau finally garner enough support to make it through? Could Power BI carry the day? Will the readers bring forth a new name to steal the show? Stay tuned to find out.

Comment. Share. Inform. Enjoy the competition. And once again, thanks for reading!

BI Madness is a concept created by Corsair’s Institute. Neither this tournament nor Corsair’s Institute is associated with the NCAA in any way. Business Intelligence should never be confused with basketball. Anyone who has seen us on the court would surely agree.
