Note — The Elite Eight round has begun — here.

March Madness has returned and so has last year’s BI Madness. It is a month long event hosted and published by Corsair’s Publishing -where we discuss, investigate, and vote on which Business Intelligence solution is most popular and most well-regarded among our readership.

Returning, of course, will be last year’s champion Qlik (we stuck to Qlikview last year, but this year we will talk Sense as well). Also returning, is the widely popular runner-up — Tableau. These two were “no brainers”. But some of last year’s field was a little weak… sorry Forrester. So while we will also revisit Microstrategy and SAP/Business Objects, the rest of this years field will be brand new!

Two rising stars were easy adds. Looker is very popular with start-ups but is it popular enough to go deep in this years voting? Domo has a lot of buzz and some awesome conferences. But we focus on substance, does Domo have the chops to take down one of last year’s championship contenders? We will find out over the next few weeks.

But who will the last two contenders be?

Let’s Start The Play-in Round

The NCAA has 64 slots and they still struggle. This year 68 teams will be named, meaning that certain teams will have to win-to-get-in. We thought we might borrow that, too.

We have identified six other contenders. They are all strong, but only two will be carried forward into next weeks first round. The rules for this play-in are the same as last year: pick your favorite solution and comment on it below (or on twitter using #BIMadness or anywhere else Corsair’s Publishing can be found). But remember, this is an analytic contest — you have to tell us a little bit about How? We don’t need a dissertation, though you are welcome to leave one, just hit your biggest reason/s.

So here is our field of aspiring contenders:

Insight Squared claims they can break your company’s addiction to Excel.

Sisense says they can provide you instant answers, even with growing data.

Phocus tagline — Got data. Get results.

Birst claims to work on any device across your enterprise.

Dundas says it will provide you full control of your data.

Kibana is an open source solution with dark horse potential.

Which technologies do you think can compete with the field of top players? Which business intelligence tool is your favorite? Only two will make it through and voting ends this Sunday!

Stay tuned. Next Monday, we will announce the final field and begin the first round of voting. We will send articles each week on the results and feature some of our top comments. We will also work to bring you more educational articles on various elements of business intelligence including how-to, links to top references, debates on technology types and the value of factors like web-based, open source, mobile-ready, html vs json, and more…

BI Madness has begun! Vote now! Follow #BIMadness on Twitter or @CorsairsIn. And thanks for reading!
