Everybody expects something both meaningful and fascinating from the words “creative” and “meritocracy”, one reason is because meritocracy has always been considered a rather utopian concept in reality. The latest serious article on the web about creative meritocracy dates back to 8 years ago.

Have we surrendered to reality?

Well, here’s a bit of Google search data for the keyword “meritocracy” along with the first 5 cities whose people/workers have de facto shown interest in meritocracy.

Google Trends report for the keyword “meritocracy” in the last 12 months

Meritocracy and, therefore, meritocratic living/working scenarios are greatly desired in the world’s most competitive economies/environments. I’m saying “greatly desired” mainly because of two reasons:

  1. The constancy of the searches over time;
  2. The interest, considered almost no one on the web is talking about meritocracy (and that’s why this blog exists).

Creative Meritocracy

Meritocracy is a principle that can be set to the foundations of any social system where the results of competition actually regulate the attribution of merit and therefore social/economic mobility, but its implications and consequences for our lives need to be studied and foreseen before implementation: Singapore shown us in the last years how different approaches to the design of competitive systems do actually affect social and economic inequality for example (think about elitism, mistrust and envy as well).

For those wanting to dive deeper in the science of meritocracy I advice to check out this article.

Coming to us…

As Scott Belsky (Adobe, Benchmark Capital…) pointed out 8 years ago about the creative jobs industry:

“Without creative meritocracy, we suffer because our talent and hard work aren’t enough to land the job. Clients suffer because they receive inferior work. Moreover, our industries and society suffer from mediocrity.”

At this point the social and economic role of creative meritocracy should be more clear to you folks, so let me introduce you to one of the most important topics of our time this blog will take care: content spreading across the web and its social platforms, because that’s where the competition happens and grows.

We are here to study and discuss together for the sake of building global awareness about the social and economic value/impact of creative meritocracy as well as the first healthy meritocratic societies of our future.

Spoiler: we’ll soon talk about the the complexities and issues in the implementation of meritocratic recruiting systems. Hit “follow” and stay tuned.
