Dr. Geoffrey Hinton “The Godfather of A.I”
13 yrs after creating the technology foundation for AI, Dr.Hinton leaves Google to be able to freely speak his thoughts on it.

THE TIMELINE

1972: Grad student with idea of “neural network” (University of Edinburgh)

1980s: Professor of computer science (Carnegie Mellon University)

~ left for Canada because he was against taking Pentagon funding from the Department of Defence

2012: Dr.Hinton and two of his University of Toronto students, Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krishevsky, built a neural network that could analyze and teach itself common objects based on photo analysis.

2018: Dr.Hinton receives Turing Award (aka Nobel Prize of computing).

March 29 2023: 1,000+ tech leaders & researchers sign open letter calling to pause AI development due to “profound risks to society and humanity”.

April 05, 2023: 19 current & former leaders of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, including Eric Horvitz, chief scientific officer at Microsoft, release their own letter of warning.

Google spent $44 million to acquire the company they started leading to the creation of ChatGPT, Google Bard among other powerful technologies.

When the data used was lesser, the power of AI power for language was noticeably lower than humans. However, as the data available increased, human intelligence still remained on top in certain areas, but it was clearly being eclipsed by AI in others.

When Google acted as the sole holder of this AI, they were able to control the path with caution. However, once Microsoft augmented its search engine using AI, the perilous race among tech giants began.

His concerns
• Speed of its creation and evolution
• False photos, videos & text will make it difficult to know true from false
• Effects on the job market
• Unexpected AI learning, uncontrolled behaviour
(generate and run own code)
• 30 to 50 year anticipation of such levels is now around the corner

His hopes
• Global regulations (unrealistic)
• World’s leading scientists collaborate on a way to control it
