Trerice, a grand stately home in Cornwall, England, dates to the Tudor period when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne. It takes you back in time to a golden age in English history when the country saw economic growth, expansion, and a greater degree of optimism than at any time during the previous 1000 years.

The property was built in 1572, during the height of the English Renaissance — a cultural and artistic movement that celebrated new writers, poets, and composers. This was the era of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe who had a lasting impact on literary thinking.

The times are reflected in today’s visitor experience, with Tudor music, costumed dress, and Elizabethan games, indoors and out.

Visitors can explore the historic house, with its quirky Elizabethan features, including 16th-century glass and ornate plasterwork.

You can try on period armour, wear chainmail, or a breastplate, or try a shield and a helmet for size. You’re encouraged to embrace the experience, and you can dress as a lady servant…
