During her time as the inaugural Dr. Gavin Wallace Fellow 2013, award-winning author and journalist Kirsty Logan worked on her collection of short stories ‘A Portable Shelter’ which explores Scottish folklore, fairytales, family relationships, loss and the sea. Afterwards, she was kind enough to speak to Creative Scotland about what the fellowship meant to her, and you can watch that video here. Logan has gone on to write further novels, Things We Say In The Dark, The Gloaming, The Gracekeepers, and to win the Polari First Book Prize and the Lamda Literary Award. Her most recent book is a riso-printed chapbook The House of Former Lovers, a collaboration with Edinburgh-based illustrator Maria Stoian.

Reflecting on her time at ASLS as Gavin Wallace Fellow, and the significance of the award to her career, Kirsty said: ‘It gave me a chance just to focus on my writing, and that was an amazing opportunity. So few writers get that.’

The first host of the Gavin Wallace Fellowship was the Association of Scottish Literary Studies in 2013–14. The Association of Scottish Literary Studies (ASLS) is an educational charity that aims to promote the study, teaching and writing of Scottish literature based at the University of Glasgow. ASLS publishes works of Scottish literature which have either been neglected or which merit a fresh presentation to a modern audience, and holds an annual conference celebrating Scottish literature and language. ASLS campaigns for a greater appreciation, both at home and abroad, in schools, colleges and universities, of Scotland’s literary culture.
