At 404 Ink, owing to a planned slowing of publishing, exacerbated significantly by the pandemic, we published just one (fantastic!) title in 2020, and launched our new non-fiction pocketbook series Inklings in 2021, and have been building gradually back up to full capacity.

Our 2022 list will comprise of five key titles, four of which are funded by Creative Scotland through the Open Fund for Organisations, and the continuation of our Inklings series. We’re delighted to be publishing the debut poetry collection from Andrés N. Ordorica, At Least This I Know, in January 2022. It’s an exceptional collection on nationhood, activism, queerness and belonging — the belonging of immigrant bodies in new countries, or the queer self within found families and safe spaces. Andrés’ work is so thoughtful and brilliant that we really can’t wait to share with readers.

We’ve yet to announce the majority of our list, but the funding will also be contributing to bringing two brilliant novels and a Scottish memoir to the world — elsewhere we have some short stories, and some more Inklings to come. Stay tuned at @404ink for more on those!

Beyond the books, we will be formalising our internship scheme. Following a successful crowdfunder earlier this year, we used the extra money to trial a paid internship and training scheme, with accompanying mentorship opportunities to more applicants; this has expanded into our free online resource Book World 101, which aims to demystify the publishing industry for aspiring publishers, break down as many barriers to knowledge as possible, and make a positive impact.

Funding towards this internship element, which will run across 2022, while allowing the co-founders of 404 to drag our work from the nights and weekends into a part time role for the duration is something that can’t be understated. The chance to focus on not only the publisher’s sustainability and the brilliant authors we’re working with, but also in building a strong infrastructure for future publishers to benefit from is something we can’t wait to dive straight into.
