I am grateful to Creative Scotland and the National Lottery for their financial support towards my next novel — a modern interpretation loosely inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped’. I plan to set my novel in similar geographic locales around Scotland, but place the work within the context of today’s multi-cultural society.

Themes of trafficking, immigration, sexual exploitation and state sponsored terrorism will make this an adult re-telling; whilst the ever-present historical political intrigue that forms the Jacobean backdrop to Kidnapped lends itself well to Scotland’s present yearning to become a separate and independent nation. Stevenson’s original work is an iconic Scottish tale, fast-paced and set within the landscape he knew and loved. This project does not aim to retell Stevenson’s plot, but to take inspiration from one of Scotland’s most well-known writers and, much like his family of engineers, shine a light on the land that formed him.

My first published work — Whirligig — was a finalist for the Bloody Scotland McIlvanney Prize in 2020, and this award allows me the freedom to explore my creative journey and to develop as a writer.
