Scotland’s an attitude of mind.

— Maurice Lindsay, “Speaking of Scotland”

For nearly forty years, New Writing Scotland has published new work from writers who are Scottish by birth, residence, or inclination, written in the languages of Scotland — standard (and not so standard) English, Gaelic, and a dazzling variety of Scots.

Nearly 700 contributors have submitted work, free of charge, to New Writing Scotland 39, scheduled to be published in Summer 2021. All submissions are anonymised and our editors — Rachelle Atalla and Marjorie Lotfi Gill, and our Gaelic editor Maggie Rabatski — will make their final choices based solely on the quality of the writing.

Each annual edition of New Writing Scotland offers a unique snapshot of the contemporary Scottish literary scene, in both poetry and prose. All subjects, styles, and genres are welcome; nothing is mandatory, and nothing is forbidden. With a regular succession of new editors to keep the content fresh and relevant, New Writing Scotland represents the strong, steady beating of the nation’s literary heart.
