Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) Edwin Morgan Translation Fellowship 2021
We at the Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) are delighted to be welcoming two renowned and outstanding professional translators to the School this year on our prestigious, Creative Scotland-funded Edwin Morgan Translation Fellowship (EMTF). Over a four-week school programme (taking place online) our successful Fellows will explore and discover contemporary Scottish literature with a view to broadening their knowledge, connecting with new Scottish texts and writers, and ultimately translating some of this wonderful literature for readers beyond the English and Scots languages.
From Spain we are very pleased to be joined by esteemed translator Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, who writes “After 20 years working as a language teacher and translator — half of which were spent in Edinburgh — , I decided to embark in a literary translation specialisation. I believe the course and the fellowship will help me take this further. Together with my background and experience, they will stand me in great stead to translate Scottish authors for the Spanish market.” And we are also delighted to be joined by English-French translator Margaret Rigaud, who adds “I am looking forward to discovering new Scottish voices and hopefully bringing them to France, as well as forging new networks in Scotland. However, I must admit that I am also delighted to have the opportunity to be a student again, even if only for a few weeks!”
As well as working closely with our world-class tutor and management team to connect with new Scottish texts and writers, our Fellows will also headline a very special public event, the Edwin Morgan Translation Showcase. This free online event is open to all and will feature our Fellows giving brief talks on aspects of their translation practice, touching on such aspects as the translation of vernaculars and cultural reference points. We’ll also be showcasing our SUISS-produced publication Seven New Strawberries: A Multilingual Anthology at the event, a unique poetry anthology featuring translations of Edwin Morgan’s poem ‘Strawberries’ into seven world languages, with short readings from the collection. Finally, we’ll have an opportunity for open discussion, drawing on Margaret and Isabel’s world-class expertise.
