WayWORD 2021 will be spending the funding awarded to us on paying performers and providing top-notch captioning and BSL signing for the 47 free online and in- person events — workshops, panel discussions, author events, film screenings and performance nights — of this year’s festival 19–26 September. Headliners include Karine Polwart, Irvine Welsh, Val McDermid, Harry Josephine Giles, Dan Schreiber, Alex Wheatle, Kirstin Innes and AL Kennedy.

WayWORD literary cross-arts festival prides itself on being completely free of charge, on the diversity and inclusion which it builds into its programming from the outset, its BSL and accessibility provision and on highlighting unconventional forms of expression from spoken word, zines and street art to comedy, song writing and dance.

The festival continues to provide mentoring and hands-on experience in all aspects of arts administration, funding application, creative programming, event organisation and delivery, as well as opportunities for chairing events themselves. WayWORD also participates in Creative Scotland’s ‘Shaping the Narrative’ scheme for increasing diversity in arts events chairing. We hope that the resulting festival has intergenerational appeal, provides a two-way learning experience for both the young and the not-so-young people involved in its delivery, and, in short, offers a programme that is far more interesting and fun for having been curated in this way. Thank you to Creative Scotland for enabling us to bring this to fruition!
