God's Electric Blanket
A photo essay and a cold winter morning journal. January Walk Journal Part 2
1–20–2025
I took a deep breath Monday morning. The air felt so pure, and the atmosphere was frozen. When I spoke, there were clouds before me, and as I looked at my neighborhood tundra, I looked at the suspended blades of grass peeking out above the layer of snow.
It's MLK day observed, so my walk route is a Ghost town, and that's just how I like it. No living thing was moving: no deer, squirrel, fox, dog or cat. Just the tracks of animals roamed in the night's cold stillness. It was so cold that even the birds were huddled up, trying to keep warm, as seen in the photos.
The moon was higher in the sky and three-quarters full on its journey to the crescent phase. My winter euphoria is unique because this hasn't been a kind winter. 2025 brought an aggressive snowstorm, but even through that challenge, God was with me. It took some adjusting, but I made it. I'm here.
The sky is clear, and there's still a shadow on the earth, and I can see those beautiful primary colors. I'm grateful. I would love to see it another morning. A new day is dawning. Before I left, I knew the temperature was in the teens (Fahrenheit), So I knew I had to layer my clothing.
