Salem Theatre Company Announces 2017 Season
Salem Theatre Company is back and bold in 2017!
After a brief hiatus to discuss the future of the company Salem Theatre Company is thrilled to be staying in their year-old home at Shetland Park and has a full of slate of programming to share.
The mainstage season kicks off in April with the classic and poignant, absurdist piece Waiting for Godot directed by Artistic Director Catherine Bertrand: on a country road towards the end of day, two clownish tramps wait and ponder their existence. By nightfall they’re still waiting. And still pondering. Between vaudevillian exchanges they share metaphysical musings with one another. At the core of Godot is the herculean effort of Vladimir and Estragon to stave off the worldly despair as they work to fully embrace their absurd existence. Waiting for Godot expresses the ruthless and ridiculous behavior of two people waiting on their last hope.
In November the theatre will stage William Shakespeare’s Othello, a tragic story of jealousy, love, and betrayal. Directed by local actor and director, Caroline Watson-Felt. In a bout of jealous rage Iago, friend of the esteemed general Othello, begins a malicious campaign against the hero. As spite and suspicion begin to infect everyone involved the consequences of Iago’s actions turn deadly.
In December, STC will partner with the North Shore YMCA Theatre and enter the mystical land of Narnia with a collaborative bringing-to-life of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Based on the fantasy novel by C.S. Lewis The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie siblings who are evacuated from their home in London during the Blitz in 1940. Upon being separated from their mother and going to live in the countryside, Lucy, the youngest sibling, discovers a wardrobe that magically transports them to the land of Narnia in the midst of a 100-year winter ruled by the White Witch. STC Artistic Director Catherine Bertrand and Nicole Heehan, Senior Creative Arts Director of the NS YMCA, are thrilled to work together on the multi-generational production this winter.
Summer productions and October programming will be announced in the coming weeks.
STC’s expanded programming continues to include the audience and artist favorite Free Staged Reading Series with pieces ranging from classic to contemporary including readings of the very timely Protest by Vaclav Havel later in February and Jack Kerouac’s Beat Generation in honor of his March birthday, and our annual Shakespeare Open Mic in April. More readings will be announced in February.
Salem Theatre Company’s educational programming is growing this year! The STC Summer Camp will return this July as a two-week teen intensive again run by local theatre artist, teacher and choreographer Katie Donovan. In addition to the summer program Artistic Director Catherine Bertrand will run an Auditioning Workshop in March as well as a Directing Workshop later this year.
STC is excited to announce a new partnership with Witch City Poetry Slam! Beginning February 13 the Slam will take over the theatre every other Mondaynight. Check out their Facebook page for line-up details and dates. Additionally the theatre will be producing semi-regular nights of live music — the first Live Sessions at STC will take place on Sunday, February 26 and will feature Ashley Skeffington and Friends.
More collaboration and partnerships are in the works to bring more of the arts community into the STC, and more STC to you! Stay tuned!

AUDITION NOTICE
Salem Theatre Company is looking for a diverse group of actors for Samuel Beckett’s infamous play WAITING FOR GODOT.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, February 19 from 3pm-6pm and Monday, February 20 from 6pm-9pm.

Casting is open to all genders, races and ages. All roles need to be filled: Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo, Lucky, A Boy. The boy can be cast as a youth actor or smaller adult actor.
Actors should prepare a one minute monologue that captures themselves as true storytellers. These characters are very much clowns so physical comedy is encouraged!
All actors will automatically be given their first time slot. Actors will ONLY be notified IF their first slot is not available.
Please bring a resume and headshot or photo of yourself. Arrive ten minutes before your time slot to complete an audition form.
Rehearsals will vary based on schedules. Performances will run April 20 — May 6.
