Over the past year while completing a Master of Architecture I’ve written a book. This is separate from my thesis and explores the nature of design as a process. The book explores an alternative method to beginning the design process focused on creating emotionally charged spatial experiences. It places the architecture in the landscape to locate a sense of place and welcomes active participation through narrative for a sense of being. The intention is to invite creativity, engage the imagination, and intensify multisensory spatial experiences.

This self-published book is largely shaped by my experience as a structural engineer and a graduate student. It draws heavily Japanese architecture and design but is applicable to any architectural project. Hopefully, on reading, you find it useful and inspiring.

You can purchase the book directly at lulu:

Design is challenging, but harder still is learning methods to approach the act of design. The book takes the position that the early stages of the design process can be considered analogous to a mathematical vector, which conceptualized to launch along a specific trajectory, can formulate an empathetic design that invites participation, engages the imagination, and intensifies a shared experience for a sense of place and a sense of being.

Written in his final year of a Master of Architecture, this book is the cumulation of Keenan Ngo’s architectural education and a previous career in structural engineering. In search of a distinct architecture, Emotive Architecture: A Design Methodology offers a design process focused on creating emotionally charged spatial experiences in architecture.
