Writing prompts for seeing things in a whole new way

Writing can help us get closer to understanding the perplexing stuff of life. Writing about a thing (or an event or a feeling or a person) offers a unique opportunity to look at said thing from all different angles, shifting it around and examining it in a way you might not otherwise. Take your lived life, mix in radical empathy and some extreme mental 3D modeling, sprinkle a dash of insight, and voila, you have a meaningful bit of creative nonfiction. Or at least you’re on your way to one.

These prompts are designed to help you see things in a new light. Let us know how it goes!

THIS WEEK’S PROMPTS

Here are some prompt ideas from me and my colleague Harris Sockel. Write whatever these prompts inspire — whether that’s creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, or something else — and post it on Medium. Tag it #Writehere so we can all find each others’ work. Remember to have fun with it — and/or, to let yourself dig deep.

Write a classified ad

Create an ad for something you’ve been missing, or something you want but don’t yet have.

Write a voiceover

This could narrate a supercut of your life. (You can describe the action in brackets or italics to break up the voiceover, sort of like a screenplay.) Or it could describe a certain event or interaction. How would a voiceover explain the scene you’re remembering?

Write a letter

Write a thank you letter to someone you despise. What have they given you, despite themselves? What has despising them done for you?

QUESTIONS ABOUT WRITE HERE?

Leave them in the responses and we will try to address them all. And don’t forget to check back here every Monday for new prompts and tips.
