When you were a kid and allowed to name your first pet did it relate to the animal’s physical appearance? Spot? Fuzzy? Cat? Boots? Or maybe a favorite item — Blankie, Binky, Dorito (yes, I read that one in a group somewhere), Buzz (Lightyear), Princess, T-Rex, etc? Naming a pet is a huge deal, and it doesn’t necessarily get any easier with age. In fact, I think it gets harder because as adults we understand the ramification of needing to yell the dog’s name at a dog park or out the back door in the middle of the night. It is slightly easier with a cat because they don’t generally go out in public, but still, you don’t want your cat getting harassed in online forums because of a silly name. (You know your cat gets on the internet.)
There are a bazillion websites with name ideas, so I’m not going to provide any lists here. Instead, I want to give you some simple tips so you don’t skid sideways on the road to the perfect pet name.
