There’s a big change coming to online news media. The long-awaited rise of Crowd Contested Media will finally take hold with the launch of credder.com. Credder is a platform for news consumers to work together by rating and critically reviewing online articles. Some are calling it the Yelp for news, capable of holding authors and outlets accountable to the public whose trust can now be measured.

Credder is dedicated to connecting people to the most ‘trusted’ and ‘newsworthy’ online articles. In order to discover which articles are most trusted and newsworthy, we’ve empowered the crowd to critically review any online article. The reviews create a trust rating for each article, author, and publisher, providing news consumers with helpful feedback when deciding where to get their news.

Credder’s story began in early 2016 under the name Tribeworthy, LLC out of personal necessity for the founding team. We were frustrated with the quality of online journalism and the lack of accountability throughout news media. Now that everyone is able to create content, it’s become harder than ever to know who to trust. Taking notes from Yelp and Rotten Tomatoes, we sought out a solution.

Fact-checking organizations such as Snopes and Politifact can be helpful, but they don’t solve the problem. Fact-checking organizations simply can’t scale to address all the articles produced daily by various news outlets. That’s why Credder is not a fact-checking organization. We don’t make claims about what’s true, nor do we investigate claims made by others. Instead, we focus on enabling the public to hold news media accountable and therefore raise the standards of the entire industry.

Credder has taken the best aspects of peer news gathering and built a platform specifically for news consumers. Our users warn each other of logical fallacies, biases, and mistakes within articles. They can even identify articles with clickbait headlines or rate how newsworthy the story is. The reviews help filter the day’s online articles, allowing the most ‘trusted’ and ‘newsworthy’ articles to rise to the top.

Many people today get their news from Facebook, which makes sense when you think about how trust is built online. People gain trust online by seeing what their peers think about a particular product or service. Gathering news was something you did on your own, but now Facebook allows you to see what your friends are saying about each article. With that said, Facebook was never meant to be a platform for news consumers.

Why do these problems with online news exist?

Most online media is for-profit, and all news outlets need a way to measure their success. Unfortunately, many outlets focus on metrics such as Likes, Shares, Views, and Advertising Revenue. None of these metrics are in the public’s best interest, and they don’t tell the story of a reader’s experience or perceived trust in the reporting.

“We need a metric that aligns the interests of news consumers and news producers: we need the people’s measure of media success. At Credder we believe sunlight is the best disinfectant and that we won’t have a reliable media until we first have a liable media.” says Cofounder and CEO Chase Palmieri.

Join the Credder community that’s pioneering Crowd Contested Media, and we’ll change the information age forever. Our launch on June 12th is just the beginning, but we expect it to become a tool that future generations take for granted.
