It’s always interesting and empowering when we find Women Only Motorcycle Riding groups, but it’s particularly interesting when we find one with the same enthusiasm and as inspiring as ‘Lady Bikers’.
The Riding group ‘Lady Bikers’ was formed by ‘Raima Samui Sarkar’ in order to create a community of like-minded women who are extremely passionate about riding motorcycles. In India, especially in Bengal, riding bikes for anything other than commuting is mostly looked upon as high headedness or
luxury. They say that people are often termed as “Crazy” if they’re seen with Performance Motorcycles. However, it’s a whole different game when it comes to women on bikes. When anyone here spots women riding motorcycles, it almost seems as if their eyes will pop out of their face. Only adding to the sadness is when we realized, existing biking clubs/groups in Bengal weren’t ready to accept women as members. Women riders were only considered go
od for riding pillion.
It is only then, that the ‘Lady Bikers’ thought, “Why should boys have all the FUN?” They say, “It would be hard to explain how we girls met and had the same kind of experience regarding biking. The fact is, it happened and we decided to create our own group. Though, we are glad to see that nowadays the point of view is changing towards p
ositive and we get very much support from other groups and organization. It feels like WE ARE ONE.”
The ‘Lady Bikers’ is based mainly in Kolkata, West Bengal and have treaded into almost every part of India. They’ve tripped across the North, East and South-East India.
The ‘Lady Bikers’ state they’re not such a big group because they believe in quality over quantity. They currently have an active riding group of 4–5 members. They don’t have a specific time or season; they just gear up and get off on t
heir saddles when they want. Sometimes all it takes is a few phone calls, a quick plan and just hit the road. “We just need an excuse, if we can’t, we just make one ;-)” says one of the group member.
We asked them what does the group stand for and mean to them in 3 words and what they said was quite interesting, “Biking in Our Hearts” was their reply. It just says a lot about the bond between their group!
The most memorable trip for the them, which they will probably cherish for a lifetime, will be the short weekend trip to Mandarmoni, West Bengal. A total of 400 kms from Kolkata, just their group and their beloved bikes. This again in the ‘Lady Bikers’ style was a totally unplanned trip, but that is probably why it’s so special to them and the memories are going to stay on forever.
