Do you keep a journal?

An invitation for Higher Thinkers

The question that kicked off the mentorship/bromance between Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (I love how they used their middle names back then) was when Emerson asked him…

Do you keep a journal?

The question went on to be a lifelong inspiration for Thoreau.

Journaling is one of the most transformative disciplines I’ve undertaken. It has helped me through several dark nights of the soul and has sparked much of the work I’m doing now.

Come unplug, camp out, and journal with me in the woods

Throughout the years, I’ve hosted a number of journaling workshops and classes. If journaling is something you’re interested in, I’ll be hosting a workshop at ‘Camp Out Yonder’ — a mindful, tech-free campout for adults that a dear friend of mine, Nellie Davis, is kicking off this year here in the eastern Sierra Nevadas.

Here’s the mission of the retreat:

We are able to communicate with each other more conveniently than ever, yet today we find ourselves to be even more disconnected. Our work weeks have gotten longer, our anxiety has gotten higher and we are losing touch with what it is that makes humanity so amazing.
Remember what it feels like to be who you really are and allow yourself to experience the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the crackling sound of wood burning in a campfire without distraction. Get away from it all for one weekend in nature and surround yourself with people who still value human connection. No followers needed.

The kind of journaling we’ll be doing is focused on self-awareness and creativity. We’ll be digging deep into our own souls to find out what words are silently but urgently waiting to express from the deepest depths of our psyches.

There’ll also be food, wine, nature hikes, campfire lectures, yoga, photography lessons, stargazing, music, and more (not just writing/journaling).

There are two separate retreats this year — one on May 26–28 and one on August 11–13 and only 30 spots are available.

Higher Thoughts readers will receive a 10% discount with the coupon code: HIGHERTHOUGHTS10. Check out the details and sign up here.

I look forward to seeing you in the woods this summer.
