On checking your phone… Again (for no reason)
How hard does this Tweet hit home?
Do you ever just check your phone for no reason? But like, all day?
— Sarah Cooper (@sarahcpr)
When I read that Tweet, I was doing just as she was pointing out. She totally caught me in the act. I thought back and realized that I’d been doing this all day.
And then it dawned on me…
I’ve been doing this for almost a decade!
Here I was, hanging out with my 4-year-old daughter, who will never be at this precious stage of life again, checking email. And the weather. And Instagram. And email again. And Medium. And Twitter.
I felt. Insane. (I’m convinced, our cell phone usage today will go down in history as the new smoking.)
I don’t know about you, but a lot of us creative professionals feel really proud for stepping out of the 9 to 5. But we have to ask ourselves…
Have we traded the 9–5 for the 6am-midnight?
Always checking. Always planning. Always stressing.
Because this just isn’t right. And it’s not necessary.
It’s not what the human soul was designed for.
This phone in our pockets is a great servant but an awful master. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
1. Stress is a killer.
2. A worthwhile life requires your presence.
Maybe it’s time to draw some firm boundaries to get out of your phone and back into your life.
I know it is for me.
