In September of 2011, a mutual friend arranged a blind date for Brett Ryan and Kristen Baxter. The two hit it off and continued on into a relationship. Kristen chose to overlook Brett’s shady past. She didn’t see Brett as the criminal that he was; she saw him as a man who was working hard to rebuild an honest life for himself. Brett was good-looking, athletic and well-liked. He was polite, friendly and generous. So what if he had taken a detour down a bad road when he was bit younger.
Just several years earlier, Brett had been dubbed “the Bearded Bandit” by the media. In 2007, Brett, 26, had dropped out of college and was living with his parents in their big house on Conference Boulevard in a suburb of Toronto. He had been enjoying the finer things in life such as $400 designer jeans with Versace belts, and a brand new Ford F-150 truck, but Brett didn’t care to work much. He was $60k in debt.
With no realistic way of digging himself out of this financial hole, Brett began robbing banks. During an eight-month period, he robbed 13 banks; he had absconded with almost $28k. Brett’s disguise included wearing a fake mustache and beard, thus the moniker he was given.
Brett was caught on June 20, 2008, when police tracked him down after his truck was seen on CCTV. Brett pled guilty at his trial in January of 2009…
