Janie Ballard told her friend, Mickey Holloway, who happened to be a crime scene specialist for the Little Rock Police Department, that she feared that her daughter, Leslie and her daughter’s husband, Mike, were going to kill her for her money. Neither one of the couple worked. They were living an upscale lifestyle though, financed by Janie and her husband Lester. When Lester died on August 19, 2003, Janie’s apprehension increased. Twenty- four days later, she was dead.

Leslie Mackool, 27, and her ne’er-do-well husband, Mike, 50, had to act fast after Lester died. They mistakenly believed that if Janie died within 30 days of Lester’s death, then Leslie would inherit all of her father’s money. As it stood, Lester had greatly diminished Leslie’s inheritance when she became involved with Mike, bequeathing her only $25,000 of his $1.5 million to $2 million estate.

Leslie’s parents prospered from their successful printing business, Shepherd’s Printing, in Little Rock, Arkansas. They didn’t care for Mike, as they were convinced that he was just using their daughter for financial gain. Leslie and her parents drifted apart.

At Leslie’s trial for the slaughter of her mother, her attorney Bill James told the jury about how Mike had a psychological hold over Leslie — who was his 4th wife and much younger than him.
