James Scott was keen to party, go fishing, and have an affair — not necessarily in that order.

But to make that happen, he needed his wife out of town. So he came up with a plan.

A plan that was so stupid that it caused flooding to 14,000 acres of land, ruined several businesses destroyed 40 homes, and led to millions of dollars of damage. As a result, it was deemed a ‘catastrophe,’ and Scott was jailed for twenty years.

It’s one of the more extreme lengths that someone has gone to, so they can cheat on their partner.

But like any good love story, was there an unexpected twist?

An unusual LinkedIn bio

Before we get to the flood, let’s take a quick look at James Scott.

Scott was born in 1969 and grew up in Quincy, Illinois. He had his first brush with the law when he burned down his elementary school at the age of 13. Six years later, he committed arson again, and by his early twenties, he had added a number of petty burglaries to his Criminal LinkedIn profile. These crimes led to several years in prison spent across several different facilities.
