On April 19, 2017, a famous former NFL player, serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, died by suicide in his prison cell.

In 2013, New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was convicted of murder. He was convicted of killing his brother in law, Odin Lloyd, who was found dead close to Hernandez’s home. Two other men, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace were arrested in connection to Lloyd’s death.

When Hernandez was arrested, the media immediately filmed him being led out of his house in handcuffs, leading to a media circus around his house. According to ESPN, the New England Patriots team immediately released a statement about the death of Odin Lloyd and Hernandez’s involvement:

“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss…Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
