Robert Mone Junior was born in 1948 to a father, Robert Mone Senior, who abused him throughout his childhood. In Mone Jr’s own words, his father even allowed a middle-age neighbour to rape him when he was 8.

In 1959, Mone went to St John’s RC High School in Dundee, where he proved not to be easy to teach. One teacher described him as being like a “live grenade in the classroom”. He felt he was bullied by the Marist Brothers, who ran the school with a rod of iron.

In 1964 he was expelled from St John’s. Nobody knows why, but Robert Mone decided to join the Army and was posted to West Germany with the Gordon Highlanders.

The Army was once again an unhappy time for the young lad. He was persuaded to give evidence against two senior officers in a Court-Martial case, which led to him being shunned by his peers. Having had enough of bullying, he went AWOL and fled to London. It was here that he bought a shotgun, having vague plans for its later use.

He then returned to Dundee, the city he knew best. He drank heavily, spending most of his time in city pubs, bemoaning his lack of a future direction. On 1st November 1967 he left The Vennel pub and found…
