It is incredibly easy to judge someone as an outsider looking in. This is especially true for drug addicts and alcoholics, but it’s also true for domestic violence victims.

They should’ve known [insert drug here] was addictive!

Alcohol is a gateway drug, obviously!

Why didn’t he/she/they leave?

What we cannot understand as observers are the details of what that person was dealing with. While there is no excuse for maliciously taking someone else’s life, there are often hidden insights that we just don’t have access to.

That said, the murder we’re talking about today has more shades of gray than an E. L. James novel. Let’s get into it.

Background

Jennifer Rae Cave came from a broken home. Her biological father was an alcoholic and her mother put up with it for an ostensibly long time. Eventually, they got divorced, but this experience created an empathetic, if a little naïve, individual in Jennifer.
