Two crimes in New England in 1990
The first crime that rocked the area was the Charles Stuart case, which I wrote about earlier. Then in May of 1990 was the murder of Greg Smart in Derry, New Hampshire.
On May 1, 1990, twenty-four-year-old Greg Smart returned to his Derry, NH condo at ten o’clock at night. He opened the door, walked inside, and called for his dog. Then he was jumped by two armed teenagers, one with a knife, one with a .38. Billy Flynn and Patrick Randall told him to shut up and get on his knees. Greg begged for his life, but Billy fired a bullet into his head, killing him instantly. The two boys fled and were picked up by friends, Vance “J.R.” Lattime, Jr., and Raymond Fowler waiting in a car nearby. All four boys went to Winnacunnet High School.
Pam, Greg’s twenty-two-year-old wife, was a communications teacher at Winnacunnet. When she came home that night, she found her husband lying dead in the hallway and ran screaming for help. Neighbors called 911.
Blonde and high energy, close in age to the teenagers, it soon came out that Pam Smart was having an affair with baby-faced Billy. The media couldn’t get enough of the story which became a media circus, not just locally but…
