Begusarai, Bihar, India: It was the summer of 2007. Amarjeet Sada, son of a daily wage labourer, was sitting in the frontyard of his modest house. His mother, a homemaker, was leaving for the market, and she had one important message for the 7-year-old Amarjeet:

To take care of his 6-year-old cousin, the daughter of Amarjeet’s aunt.

Amarjeet’s aunt had recently acquired a job as a maid in Patna and couldn’t take her daughter with her. So, she dropped her 6-year-old daughter with Amarjeet’s family.

As the mother left, Amarjeet and his cousin were alone in the house. He watched her sleep for a while. And then, with no provocation, Amarjeet started strangling her with his bare hands.

The girl choked and pedalled her legs in agony, tears flowing from her eyes. Amarjeet did not loosen his grip and enjoyed every moment of her struggle.

A few moments later, she fell still.

Amarjeet dragged the dead body of the girl to his home’s backyard. Killing her…
