Is the Ukrainian war considered a top priority issue for a British newspaper?
In the last few months, the Ukrainian invasion has undoubtedly become a top priority issue on the agenda of media all over the world.
But how does a British newspaper explore an issue of current importance?
The article “Trial by fire: Ukraine war becomes gruelling artillery duel” was published on May 13th in the electronic version of the British newspaper “The Guardian”. The article was found on the main page of “The Guardian’s” website, under the general column titled “news”. More precisely, it was placed under a column entirely dedicated to the Ukraine invasion titled “Ukraine Invasion in focus”.
Such “strategic” placement makes it easier to locate on a website filled with international news.
Does the title of the article correspond with its content?
The title of the article is pretty vague and metaphorical. It gives the impression that it will convey to us more vividly and in more detail what is currently happening on the Ukrainian battlefields. On the contrary, it touches upon many aspects (political, and social) of the Ukrainian invasion and it does not focus solely on what’s happening on the battlefields, as the title implies.
The peculiarity of this article lies in the fact that it is signed by both a reporter and a journalist.
The article seems to combine both facts and opinions.
While the article indeed presents facts and local’s comments, the correspondent’s point of view is clearly visible.
Not clearly stated, but the use of expressions that describe the whole ordeal show their support toward the Ukrainian front.
Lastly, to give a more concise answer to the initial question, the article itself does not necessarily call, the issue of the Ukrainian invasion, a priority by words. However, given the fact that “The Guardian” has an entire category on its website dedicated to the war entitled “Ukraine”, as well as a “live” news segment, leads us to believe it is considered a priority issue.
