Late wake up call

DiaNEOsis’ six-year research that shed light into the behavior of Greeks regarding crisis

Through the years of its existence, the nation of Greece has come across a lot of hardships, both internal and external. But the Greeks, like always, have managed to push through, coming out on top in the end with the cheery attitude that they are known for. But is it really that way? Do the Greeks have a positive attitude in periods of war as well as peace? In famine and prosperity? In poverty and wealth? According to a research by diaNEOsis, the people of Greece may have started facing danger in a more appropriate manner.

The research and policy institute diaNEOsis has been contacting for the last six years a quantitative research, in order to analyze and draw conclusions about the behavioral patterns of Greeks, when faced with a local or global crisis. This research has taken into account every significant crisis that Greece has faced over the last six years -like the economic crisis of 2015, lethal environmental disasters, the latest invasion in Ukraine, etc.- and has gathered data regarding the way the people felt, faced, and demanded for the crisis to be resolved.

The research acknowledges that collecting the full spectrum of the nation’s feelings is not entirely possible from quantitative research, since questions can be misinterpreted and influenced from what the person questioned considers to be the expected answer. They mention though that it is still a great piece of insight into the Greek consensus.

The diaNEOsis institute concluded that Greeks as a whole have become more aware of a dangerous/critical situation, ergo they are usually more worried about an on going or in coming crisis, a complete one eighty from previous behavior, when Greeks thought that they were invisible to danger. They also seem to have moved on from proposing extreme and ludicrous changes to be made in order to resolve a crisis (for example some people were proposing a Grexit and a return to drachma during the crisis of 2015), and they now ask for sensible and achievable measures of state support.

As the Star Tuppers team, we believe that this phenomenon is very important. As the article of diaNEOsis stated on the matter, this is a big step that Greece has made towards being a part of a multicultural and liberal world. Greece has to consider the ongoing and incoming dangers exactly as that; dangers. The feeling of indestructibility can only make us more vulnerable to a crisis, and as such more easily to face annihilation. After all, who should know most about hubris, but the Greeks.
