Mercy Kinoti & Tessie Waithira the publication collaborators

Collaboration is where people work together to achieve a common goal. A preferred creative approach that is applied across different sectors and is common in art/music collabos or business partnerships. It advances your chance of discovery, learning and growth.

This publication itself is a collaboration between Tessie Waithira and Mercy Kinoti and it’s interesting to see how we have varying ideas all rooted on a common goal. Being in great collaboration teams has been the best thing that ever happened to both our careers. I remember a colleague mentioning earlier on when we started out that workplaces are all about relationships and we almost didn’t believe them, well, now we know better.

Here’s our 3 tips on successful collaboration

Be resourceful — Everyone has a role to play

Remember to bring the best of what you do to the table, all while maintaining a sense of self but don’t let it get in the way of the groove, always be open minded to hear others out. As a part of the team, you are an additional brain, ear, hand and eye at work, your input is equally valuable. Not only do you get to contribute what you know but you also get to unlock other levels of knowledge. There were instances where collaboration helped us overcome a creative block and even brought out creativity we didn’t know we had.

Learn in the process — It really is about knowledge sharing

Collaboration is a great way to share knowledge and resources. Working with someone helps you get a full access to their way of thinking and workflow, you also get to share yours and compare different work styles and ethics.Working in a team also teaches you other skills applicable in day to day living. Things like beings a great listener, communicator, resolving conflicts, trust and taking ownership. There’s always something new to learn from every interaction, be open and curious.

Breaking Bad — can you ever talks about varying skill sets collaboration and leave these two?

Communicate — Open communication is key

If you have to, over-communicate even. The best way to approach this in teams is in writing form, not only does writing solidify and give you clear thinking but it also creates a great way of shared reference area. Write those goals down, meeting notes etc. If you do not agree with something, speak up, always have open communication lines. Remember to seek clarity on deadlines, accountability and deliverables. Great communication puts everyone on the same page and sets you up for success.

Collaboration is a core thing in product development. Ideally, several people with varying skill sets come together to create products. Collaboration can be hard but when approached well, it’s a great win. We’ve all had our share of failed collaborative efforts either due to unclear goals or we fell short of keeping our word when we said we will do something, but in most times, when approached well, collaboration results in great wins.

Remember to approach projects with an open mind. Collaboration amplifies success and results in a win/win.
