What I learned at the National Coalition on Millennial Health Summit

--

By Kate Y Houghton, Co-Chair, Critical Mass Transition Task Force

Earlier this year, Young Invincibles — the leading young adult health care advocacy group — launched the National Coalition on Millennial Health. The coalition brings together organizations like Critical Mass who advocate on behalf of young adults from a variety of different backgrounds.

This month we all met at the White House (I know, so cool!) to discuss open enrollment. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Even though more people than ever before have health care coverage (20 million), young adults are still more likely to be uninsured than any other population.
  2. Open enrollment for health care in 2017 STARTS on November 1 and ENDS on December 15.
  3. It is up to us to get the word out! That’s why HHS launched a brand new program directed at young adults. You can read about their targeted programs and download new tools HERE.
  4. Use #HealthyAdulting on all your social media platforms so other orgs can check out what you are doing to reach young Americans and incorporate best practices into their outreach.

That’s it for now. Looking forward to the next Coalition meeting!

PS. For those of you (cough cough i.e. not millennials) who have no idea what “adulting” means here’s a nice comic that sums it up perfectly…

Each year 70K Americans 15–39 years old are diagnosed with cancer but we have no medical “home” and providers must make treatment decisions using data, facilities, and practices that are designed for young children or older adults. Our cancer is different. This is our story.
